What Makes a Flat Bottom Coffee Bag?

Flat bottom coffee pouches have a formed base, expanding side gussets, and distinct front and back panels. The base supports an upright presentation; the panels give you separate areas for your brand, coffee information and other packaging text.

Flat bottom bags are also called box bottom or block bottom bags. We can show you the base, side folds and seals on a drawing or sample, so you know exactly which construction you are ordering.

Check the filled bag’s shape and how it sits on your display surface.

Top opening

Confirm access for filling and enough clear space for the first heat seal.

Is This the Right Bag Format for Your Coffee?

Choose a flat bottom bag if you want a defined base and separate artwork panels. If you prefer a simpler pouch shape or a taller side gusset bag, we make those too. The table below helps you compare them.

FormatStructure to reviewDecision to make
Flat bottom coffee bagFormed flat base, side gussets and defined panelsDoes the filled shape suit your shelf, artwork and filling process?
Stand-up coffee pouchBottom gusset and front/back pouch panelsDoes this pouch shape provide the fill space and presentation you need?
Side gusset coffee bagExpanding side panels and the selected seal constructionDo the gussets, filling opening and closure arrangement suit your packing method?

We quote each format with your chosen dimensions, film, printing, accessories and quantity. That lets you compare bags with the same coffee protection and features.

Choose the Size Around Your Coffee and Filling Process

Tell us whether you pack whole beans or ground coffee and the weight in each bag. We can suggest dimensions for a 250 g, 12 oz, 400 g or 2 lb pack, then help you check the fit and sealing space with a sample.

  1. 1. Share your target fill.

Tell us the coffee type and weight in g, oz or lb. For reference, 12 oz is approximately 340 g by weight; it does not describe a fixed bag volume.

  2. 2. Review the bag measurements.

Compare the width, height, side gusset or base depth, and the usable space inside the selected construction. You can share an existing bag or measurements in mm or inches.

  3. 3. Trial the filling operation.

Use your coffee and actual packing method to review the opening, fill level, side expansion and space around the valve or zipper. Tell us if you fill by hand or use equipment.

  4. 4. Check the first seal and finished shape.

Keep coffee clear of the sealing area, confirm sufficient sealing clearance, and review the filled bag on your display surface. Confirm equipment settings with the selected bag material and your sealer.

Whole beans and ground coffee take up different amounts of space. Fill a sample with your coffee before approving the dimensions, so the bag has enough room for the coffee and a clean top seal.

Select the Complete Material Structure

We offer film laminates, kraft-paper laminates and recyclable or compostable options. We will help you choose the layers for your coffee protection, sealing process and preferred appearance.

DirectionWhat to discuss
Film laminatesThe full layer structure, oxygen/moisture protection requirements, light exposure, and sealing behaviour
Kraft-paper appearanceThe paper finish and all supporting layers; a paper-looking bag can still be a composite package
Recyclable material optionsThe proposed material, valve and zipper, supporting information, and the collection route available in the intended market
Compostable material optionsThe complete configuration, supporting information and intended composting conditions

Tell us where you sell your coffee. We can explain the material options, share available documents and help you choose disposal wording for your bag.

Plan the Valve, Zipper and First Seal Together

These details serve different purposes. Select them as part of the bag you will fill, seal and hand to your customer.

One-Way Degassing Valve

A one-way valve lets gas from roasted coffee escape while helping limit air entering through the valve. We select the valve and its position to suit your film and bag layout. Your packing process should also control the air left inside the bag.

Zipper or Pull-Tab Opening

A zipper lets customers close the bag after use. A pull-tab opens access to the zipper. We can supply samples so you can compare the opening direction, access to the coffee and filling space.

Initial Heat Seal

Heat-seal the filling opening after packing the coffee. The zipper is then available for customers to reclose the bag after opening. Try the agreed film on your sealer to set the temperature, pressure and sealing time.

Artwork and Accessory Placement

Keep essential wording and graphics clear of folds, seal areas and the chosen opening. Confirm the valve and zipper locations on the final bag layout.

Free Design for Your Flat Bottom Coffee Bag

You do not need a designer or finished artwork to start. Tell us about your brand, the coffee and the look you want. We help develop the design around the agreed bag panels and production requirements.

  • Free Design

We work with your ideas, logo, wording or existing packaging to develop your coffee bag artwork.

  • Unlimited Revisions

We work through revisions with you until you approve the design.

  • Free Layered Production Files

After you approve the design, we prepare layered files for print production, matched to the agreed dimensions, printing method and packaging details.

Discuss digital or gravure printing alongside the quantity, number of designs, material and finish. Review artwork placement around the panels, folds, valve, zipper and seal areas before production.

A logo, a reference bag or an idea is enough to start the conversation.

Flat Bottom Coffee Bag Questions

Are flat bottom, box bottom and block bottom coffee bags the same?

These names often refer to a similar formed-base bag format. Confirm the actual base, gussets, seals and opening on the drawing and sample. A term such as quad seal describes a seal arrangement and is not enough on its own to confirm that two bags have identical construction.

How does a flat bottom bag differ from a stand-up coffee pouch?

A flat bottom bag has a formed base and side gussets; a stand-up pouch uses its selected bottom-gusset construction. Compare the filled shape, usable space, artwork panels and packing process with samples. Choose the format that fits your coffee and display requirements.

Can I use flat bottom bags for whole beans and ground coffee?

Yes. We make flat bottom bags for whole beans and ground coffee. Send the coffee weight and your filling method, and we will recommend dimensions. Try a sample with your product before approving the size.

What size do I need for 12 oz or another coffee fill?

There is no single dimension set that fits every coffee with the same net weight. Start with your fill and review the usable space, gussets, valve or zipper position and sealing clearance. Trial the sample with your actual coffee before confirming the project dimensions.

Does every flat bottom coffee bag need a degassing valve?

Valve selection depends on the coffee and how it will be packed. Roasted coffee releases gas, and a one-way valve can provide an outlet while limiting air entering through that opening. Review the requirement, valve type and position as part of your complete specification.

Does a zipper replace the first heat seal?

A zipper supports reclosure after opening. Review the initial sealing arrangement separately for the selected construction. Confirm the heat-seal area and your sealer’s operation with a sample of the agreed material before packing for sale.

Are flat bottom coffee bags recyclable or compostable?

We offer recyclable and compostable material options, as well as conventional barrier laminates. We will explain the proposed film, valve and closure, share available documentation and help you check the disposal conditions in your market.

Can I use digital or gravure printing and several artwork designs?

Yes. We offer digital and gravure printing and can prepare several designs for a coffee range. Send the quantity for each design, size, material and finish. We will recommend a printing method and prepare a quote.

What is the minimum order quantity and price?

Request a quotation for your proposed dimensions, material, printing, accessories, total quantity and quantity per design. We will discuss the applicable order requirements and costs for that specification. If you are considering a small stock-bag requirement, you can also ask about our stock coffee bags.

Can you help without finished artwork, and are production files free?

Yes. We offer free coffee packaging design with unlimited revisions. After you approve the design, we prepare layered production files free of charge for the agreed bag dimensions and printing requirements. Start with your idea, logo or existing packaging.

Can I review samples and food-contact documents before ordering?

Yes. Free samples of similar materials are available; custom sample fees are refunded when you place an order. Ask us to confirm the sample scope and any shipping costs. Relevant factory certifications and supporting food-contact documentation can also be requested for your project and shared directly.

What are your production and shipping times?

Production takes 7–12 days; shipping takes 7–10 days. Door-to-door delivery is available with taxes included. Share your destination and planned date so we can discuss the delivery arrangement and costs covered by the quotation.
